How to Start a YouTube Channel: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques

[0:00] – Introducing this week’s podcast: Starting a YouTube Channel, featuring Liron Segev (TheTechieGuy)

  • The first steps in getting started on YouTube involve preparation: understanding what lies ahead by doing enough research beforehand, and understanding why you want to be on YouTube in the first place.
  • Anyone can press the record button, regardless of how experienced or inexperienced they are in front of the camera.  However, without a clearly defined sense of purpose, any sort of effort in this area will be for nothing.
  • Before going on YouTube, reflect upon this: What do you want to achieve?

[4:13] – What YouTube is the absolute best for, and how it can benefit your self-reinvention.

  • At the end of the day, YouTube is a search engine — one of the world’s largest, if not the largest.
  • Its biggest function is still to provide information; it serves as the starting point for people who are trying to get answers. Understanding the kind of customers whom you want to become your followers (and having “a servant’s heart”) will guide you in creating content.
  • Many people make the mistake of coming in with the wrong impression: thinking that it's saturated, everyone's doing it, everyone's answering those questions, everybody's entertaining, and other self-defeating thoughts.
  • What people want on YouTube is reliable, authoritative experience. And people, especially those in the grey zone, have got so much to give.
  • When you've put yourself out — if you trust your experience, if you trust that you have value, and you honor that experience — it will start to resonate with a community. It becomes a neat introduction to this space, because not only do you have to overcome your sensibilities as far as finding your messaging and overcoming your insecurities, but you also have to overcome your technical phobias.
  • At first, you’re not going to be good at it. Which is okay, because nobody was born into this world knowing everything. But don’t let that technophobia stop you, because if you do, you're never going to get better at it.

[4:13] – Production value over getting straightforward answers

  • People who are looking for practical advice and solutions on YouTube are  not going to let aesthetics prevent themselves from clicking on your content. Focus more on substance than style. Don’t obsess over perfection.
  • At the beginning of your YouTube journey, remember that growth comes one relationship at a time. And the more that those people feel bound to you and have a relationship with you, the more that they're going to be there; the more that they will continue to watch you and help you grow your channel.

[12:09] – Whether you should worry about an ideal timeframe for YouTube growth.

  • Just keep creating content and follow your numbers with analytics tools. Again, focus more on simply delivering consistent, quality content.

[14:06] – Establishing a format.

  • There is no template for success: Be yourself. Deliver your content your way, on your channel. There is no standard format because audiences are not standard.

[17:35] – Learning and adapting as you grow on the platform.

  • You could make the exact same content as somebody else and file and you can literally be the exact same content and still fail. Why? Because there is no formula. There is nothing worse than comparing your analytics or your stats to somebody else, because it will destroy your soul and suck the fun out of what you’re doing.

[20:45] – Why YouTube owes you nothing, and why creating videos is always just the beginning.
