Webinars: The Best Way to Build Your Online Community – GM2

As opposed to traditional media, webinars are the best way to build a community. Here are 6 reasons why, via the Grey Matters podcast.

Webinars as tools for community-building

[0:00] – Introducing this episode: Webinars and how they’re effective community-building tools.

  • Back then, being able to broadcast to a community required FCC approval, a broadcast license, expensive gear, and a crew in place on the broadcast spectrum to reach the masses, whether on television or via radio.
  • Nowadays, a webinar can accomplish all that, and it’s remarkable that we are now essentially able to create our very own private broadcast networks, complete with real-time communication.
  • There are six reasons why webinars are excellent tools for building an online following.

[6:22] – Webinars are flexible.

  • Webinars can be used both internally and externally, and are wonderful platforms for education, training, or preparation.
  • They are also effective for marketing; in fact, many online marketers use webinars as their main information delivery and promotional mechanism.
  • Not only are webinars good for conversion, they’re also entertaining, and provide immense value.
  • Webinars are most effective with an active live chat. It creates social proof, while giving you a real feel for how your peers are accepting and embracing your content.

[8:25] – Webinars are relevant.

  • When people come and attend a webinar, they are coming with intent, meaning the content is relevant to them.
  • Live streams, on the other hand, may be stumbled upon by accident–and if it’s not something you opted to consume in the first place, there’s a good chance you’ll just exit it.
  • Webinar attendees have already moved farther down that sales funnel, into accepting whatever the messaging is that you're going to be delivering.
  • People coming to your webinar can quickly determine whether or not you are a trustworthy individual–and decide whether or not they want to stay with you.
  • On the pure business side, you need to ask people for their email address and continue to build your email list. After all, your email list is the heart of your business, and the health of any online content marketer’s business.

[12:21] – You can leverage webinars.

  • With webinars, you can record and create evergreen content; when you deliver your webinar, it can be reused for blogs, video posts, and other social media output.

[13:50] – Anyone can do a webinar.

  • You can start out with just a few people; in fact, it is not recommended  to start out with a huge webinar.
  • A lot of webinar content is pre-recorded, meaning the speaker isn’t actually on the hook for the live part of the demonstration. With this approach, you can focus on your webinar feed, and on answering questions from your audience.
  • Responding to questions is a really easy way to deliver content, and a great way to prove that you know what you're talking about.

[15:24] – Webinars are a fast track to Know, Like, Trust (KLT).

  • KLT theory says that in order for people to do business with you online, they have to know you, like you and trust you.
  • If you are delivering a webinar, you’re on camera, answering questions live with your voice, your face, your expressions, and your body language. All of those things fall right into the sweet spot of how humans decide whether they know, like, and even trust people.
  • As the presenter in the webinar, people will get to know you really well. This, in turn, gives you an opportunity to do business down the line.

[18:06] – Webinars have unlimited reach.

  • You can deliver a webinar to a huge group of people.
  • Having said that, you should still consider taking your webinar and turning it into a mini-course that you can keep resharing and reusing. With this, your reach becomes unlimited.

[23:17] – There are some essentials that make webinars successful.

  • First, you have to have great content, and you must understanding your content and how you should be delivering it.
  • You have to find a way to actually get people to register; admittedly, this is one of the biggest roadblocks that many, many people face.
  • In every webinar that you deliver, you have to be delivering something of value. And you should be listening to what your community is asking you, responding to their questions, and making sure that they're getting what they expect and need from you.
  • Lastly, you always have to build into your webinars some sort of a follow-up sequence to allow you to give you permission to engage your community with questions and answers going ahead.
