Avoiding Facebook Imposter Accounts

Have you ever gotten a Facebook friend request from someone you are already friends with or from an obviously fake account? This happened to me a few days ago. I got a friend request from a Facebook Imposter. So what can you do about Facebook Imposters? Let's take a look.

Fighting Facebook imposters

The first thing you should do is check in with your friend, let them know you got a request, and find out if it is a legitimate account. Once you are sure this is a bogus account, it's time to let Facebook know about it. Head over to the “Report an Impostor Account” page. Facebook offers three potential situations:
  • Someone is using my email address on their account
  • Someone created an account for my business or organization
  • Someone created an account pretending to be me or a friend
Pick the option that applies to your situation then follow the instructions.

Be proactive

To make Facebook a safer place for all of us, we need to be proactive. This means taking action when we see something suspect– whether it's the spread of fake news or a Facebook imposter account. Until next time,
