The mini notebook
Hi Steve,
I am thinking of purchasing 3 of these notebooks for my 3 children, they are 11, 9 and 5.
In your televised version of The Mini Notebook, you stated that the new upcoming technology would be more interactive with the kid’s games, a superior processor, and 5Ght amongst other features I find this very all fascinating. It seems as if many applications are finally merging together.
It has become obvious as my older child gets ready for junior high school that the notebook computer will be the best investment for their future, it’s clear in my mind that they will be carrying these around like text books.
Most of the text books can be downloaded or access very easily and with WiFi now available in the schools and downtown core of the city of Toronto I need to keep them up to speed.
Can you please tell me more about this upcoming technology and who would be selling these new notebooks and how can I get more information?
Your information will be very much appreciated buy me and my family.
Yours truly,
R. Valela

The mini notebook
Good Day,
I would recommend that you purchase the units that come with Windows installed as they would be much more compatible for what your children are going to encounter in the school system.
Fraser
using linux preinstalled on notebooks
Unfortunately, i have to disagree with Fraser, in his assumption that your children will require Windows to be installed in order to use their notebooks in their day to day education.
My daughter finished gr 12 with an eeePC with Centos installed and was able to create docs and spreadsheets with open office just fine. She continues to use it in her college work, as it is so much lighter in her back pack then a regular laptop.
Parents should not have to pay for a student version of MS office, just because the school happens to have it installed. You can make MS office compatible docs in Open Office.
With the wireless connection etc, it is no different then using a vista or XP laptop. The only snag we hit was trying to install a webcam, but there are notebooks with webcams built-in.
Linux is becoming mainstream, and because her work was saved on flash drive, to re-install was easy. It is just functional for a quick method of recording her notes in class. I used an external USB dvd drive to re-install btw
Windows XP and Netbooks

1. How long will Microsoft support Windows XP on the Netbooks? I know that some are not upgradeable to Vista etc.

2. What if it crashes or has to be reformatted. There is no internal CD drive?

Windows XP and Netbooks
Good Day,
You would have to inquire about this at the time of purchase.

Looking forward on the netbook
Netbooks are cool. Maybe I should get a netbook with Linux. Plus netbooks are small, compact and affordable. I heard there are netbooks avaliable with 120 to 160 GB of hard disk drive. I have seen videos on Youtube with netbooks running Windows Vista, even multibooting with Linux (mainly Ubuntu) and Mac OS X. Once I get my Acer Aspire one netbook with Linux or Windows XP, I would install Ubuntu on my 16 GB USB flash drive, so I can boot Ubuntu on my flash drive. (Maybe I would do that really soon because Ubuntu 9.04 linux is due to release soon. (Check out Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com))

This Acer now comes with Windows XP
Dotto Tech - sorry to hear you have stopped broadcasting!
By the way, this Acer Aspire One netbook you are writing about no longer costs $400. The price has dropped to under $280 in Canada. The specs are 160GB hard drive and an intel atom processor. the operating system is windows XP. This is amazing when you consider that a few years ago a typical laptop would have cost over a grand. Fast forward to 2009 and today cheap laptops are going ever lower in price, and we may soon see a sub $100 dollar notebook in the next few years. - http://www.cheaperlaptop.com
ACER ASPIRE AS1410-2497
Hi Steve, very sorry we can't watch on TV anymore. Your program is so useful to us who are not well versed in electronics.
We have to rely on you which model is the best buy for mini laptops. I am thinking of buying one that is light and user friendly. I watched a lot of videos on the net and do emailing. I am hoping to buy myself a little one.
What do you think about the above model for my purpose?

Good Day,
This looks like a reliable unit. I have used several similar ones in the past with no problems.

I like it! Acer notebooks are of good quality.
Not long ago I read one article about new device (found a very interestine magazine HighTech at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com ). It is a very small digit that can think. It can give you the information about everything (it is like transparent laptop), it can make photos, it can scan books and at once show the reviw about it. It is increadible. It was written that Apple was going to buy the patent. That is why soon it would be in mass production. But till that time we can successfully use this small notebook as a nice alternative.
