HP PhotoSmart C8180

The perfect multifunction for the ultra-portable world.

It is not very often in this forum that I choose to write a whole column on a single piece of technology, not when that technology is a printer - make that a multifunction device. Blackberrys, or iPods yes, imaging devices, not so much. That is going to change because I am smitten with a peripheral: HPs PhotoSmart C8180 All In One.

I have probably shown a few dozen multifunction printers on my show over the years, and I have to tell you, the bar is pretty high when it comes to today’s crop of AIO (all-in-one) devices. Each time I look at a new one I am impressed with the innovations in print technology, price and interface. The manufacturers are constantly challenged to come up with better, less expensive, more innovative technology, and the bar keeps climbing higher.

The C8180 is the first AIO I have used to boast its own CD/DVD burner, which merits asking the question: Why would you want a CD DVD burner in your printer? Do you have a few minutes? There are a lot of reasons! As you would expect you can make CDs and DVDs directly from memory cards, which is a very convenient process; great for both back up and sharing your photos.

But for me, the most exciting thought came when I consider the computers I am using day by day. I am using a Lenovo Tablet PC, and the new Apple MacBook Air. I like small and portable, but there is a price to pay in most sub 3lb notebooks: the absence of an optical drive.

The drive in the C8180 works flawlessly with both the Windows and Mac PC, allowing me to import, burn and read CD and DVD media on a computer with no built in drive! It is perfect! Am I gushing? Yes, but I don’t care. This solves so many nagging little problems for me. Oh, and it is a great printer scanner as well. It will scan slides and other transparent media, and it is a Photosmart printer, meaning it will print at photo lab quality. It has built in wireless - both Bluetooth and Wifi - and when HP says the C8180 is designed for wireless use they were not kidding; both Wifi and Bluetooth perform flawlessly in both Windows and Mac environments.

One of the real keys to a device like the C8180 is the interface screen. All this power would be nowhere near as impressive if it were not for the excellent interface. It is a hallmark feature we are seeing in many peripherals these days. Touch screens make already good products much better, because they give us easy access to all the key features and settings.

The PhotoSmart C8180 is the most complete AIO I have had the pleasure to use. The CD/DVD burner is a stroke of genius; it makes an already compelling product groundbreaking. The moment I saw the drive in the printer I hoped it would work the way I envisioned, and it does!

Wireless, networkable, CD/DVD burner, scanner, copier, printer and a revolutionary touch screen interface; that bar I spoke of earlier has reached new heights.

HP support

I have a great HP LJ3150 multi-function printer but HP has not produced Vista drivers for it. They don't discuss their support policies and I cannot use the HP machine with my Vista desktop.
I worry about whether I will have to buy a new printer everytime MS forces a change in operating systems. I suspect Vista will turn out like Windows ME - here today, gone tomorrow. Is that why HP won't support Vista for many printers?
What's wrong with HP that they leave a huge number of users in the dark about drivers. Many, me included, won't buy HP after this experience.

Re: Deceased family pet photo

Hi Steve
I have a photo of our family pet that recently died. It is only 2.74KB 96x96 (im guessing mega pixels). Is there any way to enlarge this photo to approximatly an 8x10 or 5x7 and not have it totaly distorted?

Deceased family pet photo

Hi sweetpea534.
Sounds like you aren't talking about an actual photo, but about a 2.7KB file, of your photo. If it's a file, then there is almost nothing that you can do to produce a good larger picture, because the original picture was scanned in at too low a resolution. 96x96 is most likely 96x96 actual pixels per inch (ppi), not 96,000,000 (million) pixels per inch.
If you still have the original picture, just rescan it into your computer at a much higher resolution, such as 300dpi (dots per inch) or 1200dpi or 2400dpi or 4800dpi or even 9600dpi. Then you will be able to print it perfectly in larger lizes such as 5x7, 8x10 or even larger.
If the picture came from a digital camera, maybe importing it or your current picture into Photo Shop or other equivilent program and see if this(these) programs can increase the ppi or dpi to a higher resolution. If so, then maybe you would be able to print a good quality larger photo.
Vince.

I'd try and have the photo

I'd try and have the photo printed on a very good printer check http://www.astrocall.com.au/printers.html use photo quality with a high resolutions then scan it and print to size, or play with it in photoshop they have some good plugins to work with photos.

How?

Hello!

I am just wondering... How did you make the dvd-burner/player on the HP C8180 work as an external driver for the macbook air? I can't seem to get it to work properly with mine...

Thank you!

What is the different

What is the difference. Between a Notebook and a Lap top Computer?

What is the different

Good Day,

Both of these terms are the same. They both mean portable computers.

8180 DVD printing with lightscribe

Steve;

I also like the new 8180, but have a few questions. I have a Mac, and it doesn't seem to pair up with it as easy as I would like. It does not recognize my cds and dvds made on my Mac....

That's not the problem, though... I can just come in from memory stick, and get photos that way.

I have a question.

Can I print pictures on these DVDs, or just the tiny letters it prints when I type in the thing I want written on the discs? And can I change the tiny little size it writes in?

I LOVE MACS, but Steve Jobs has this absolute AVERSION to helping me become an amateur movie producer in full, because he won't create a flip and burn like the HPs have...

Thanks

8180 DVD printing with lightscribe

Good Day,

You can print text or pictures onto DVD's using this unit. And yes you can change both the font and size of your text.

Fraser

Okay...

Using a Mac, what do I need to do to make this happen?

Text is small

Hi, I found this thread while searching for help. I've had my C8180 all-in-one for over a year and never had any problems. Recently, however, everything I print has changed to micro-mini print (text)! I do not find a place to change font size anywhere on the printer or within the utilities! This is ruining my life--well, almost! Can you help? I am on a Mac OSX 10.5.8. My printer has been hooked up to the Mac since day one. I am wondering if some Mac update caused this problem. Would appreciate any help you can offer!
Thanks, Karen
