When is the right time to buy a PC? Read on...

When is the best time to buy a new PC? Should you wait until next month when the new processor speed or new graphics capabilities launches? Of course you could play this waiting game forever and you’d never get a computer. The only thing you should think about is what you want your computer to do for you and then get a computer that can do that. To help clarify what this means, let’s take a look at some of the aspects of a computer you should be looking for:
- Mac or PC? This is becoming a tought question to answer. Apple computers pack a lot of fun and productivity in their computer. PCs have the familiarity of years of use behind them. Which is right for you will be based on which programs you need to run and how comfortable you are with staying or switching to a new operating system.
- Processor: Intel or AMD? Doesn’t really matter. They both have their camps stating why theirs is better than the other. Best not to worry about it. What you should be looking into though is multi-core processors. Nowadays you can’t get by with just one processor. You might find that you’ll need more processors to help you get your work done faster. Currently there are four types of processors: single, double, triple and quad-core. As you can imagine – the higher the better. What exactly does better mean – and who would need it?
- If you plan on only using your computer for surfing the web, basic office documents, viewing photos and videos – then you could get by with any of these.
- If you plan on challenging your computer a bit more by doing many of these things at the same time (multi-tasking) then start at dual core.
- If you also like to get more creative with your computer and like to edit photos and videos then a triple or quad core is a better bet.
- If you’re a gamer, well – there’s no such thing as a computer that’s too fast for a gamer!
- RAM: RAM helps keep any programs that are currently running, performing as fast as possible. So if you like to run a lot of programs at the same time (multi-tasking again), or you like to do memory intensive things (those creative tasks like editing photos and videos), then you want more RAM. 2 GB is becoming the standard while some computers are coming with 3 or 4 GB.
- Video Card: every computer needs a video card. Some are built right into the motherboard – and some are replaceable. Motherboard video cards have the advantage of making the computer less expensive while replaceable video cards have the advantage of being...well, replaceable! This probably is of interest mostly to gamers. A couple other things to look for in a video card are TV tuner and multiple monitor inputs.
- TV tuner allows you to plug your cable right into the computer and use it to watch TV. Combined with Media Centre you now have your own PVR (Personal Video Recorder – see Before You Buy...a PVR).
- Multiple monitor inputs are becoming popular. If you haven’t experienced the benefit of working with multiple monitors, then you’re in for a treat! Check out the Before you Buy...a monitor for more details.
- Vista: Basic or Premium? Only the absolute entry level computers only come with Basic – and it might be ok for you if you never plan on using Media Centre. Media Centre is an easy way to view all your media (photos, music, videos) and even allows you to use the computer as a PVR (as long as it also has a TV Tuner built in as discussed above). If you have an Xbox 360 – then go for the Premium as you will want to connect your Computer to the 360 to take advantage of all that media centre has to offer.
There are more things to look for when buying a computer, but these will get you on the right track. Manufacturer’s have trained the consumer to fear buying a computer because they are outdated so fast. Fortunately the days of not having a fast enough computer to play the latest game are pretty much behind us. The only recommendation I’d like to make is for you to really look at how you might want to use your computer in the future. While you might not be into video editing right now – will that change? That will frustrate you if you bought an entry level computer and are now finding everything too slow. Everyone usually underestimates how much power they need. Try to buy as much as you can realistically afford.

anti virus
I'm looking for a new anti-virus,something great but affordable. What ones could you recommend. I'm also looking to buy a new computer. Is a laptop better?
The two big names are
The two big names are MacAfee and Norton by Symantec. Norton got some flack for causing too much slowdown but their Norton 360 v.2 has removed that concern from anyone's mind.
Laptops and desktops have different uses. I have one of each! Laptops are great for the flexibility and portability - but they're not great for long periods of time working on them - unless you get a dock with a keyboard, monitor and mouse. Also a desktop is preferred for gamers for the upgradeability aspect and for those that are serious about graphic or video editing.
Otherwise a laptop is fine for most people. 10 years ago desktops outsold laptops but now the opposite is true as the prices have fallen and you can get laptops under $400!
Good luck in your search!
I have used both McAfee and
I have used both McAfee and Northon, but I prefer PC Tools Spywear Doctor and Anti Virus! PCmag.com refers the former as crap ware but hey, everybody has their bias opinions and I guess this one is mine. Cheers.

Free AV?
Good Day,
I would recommend either of the following:
AVG - http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage
Avast - http://www.avast.com/

Anti-virus software
There is no need to spend money every year on the 'big name' software like Norton or MacAfee. You can get the Avast anti-virus program (the Home edition) from Avast.com for free. I've been using it for about 5 years and it has worked very well for me. I know several people who use it and are quite happy with it.
Adding RAM to an existing laptop
I was wondering how you figure out what kind of memory your computer needs..I would prefer to install my own memory as the install costs are a little much. When I go to the computer store and ask for help with choosing it's still mind boggling.
Laptop RAM
Go to the manufacturer's website and search for the tech specs/manual. It will be in there. Otherwise, try Googling your computer model number and the word RAM. Good luck - and remember, you can really harm your computer if you don't do it correctly. Seems like an easy thing to do - but static can really affect the insides of your laptop so wear an anti-static wrist strap if possible.
Dual Boot
I'm about to purchase my first mac and switch over from PC.... I'm going with the Mac Pro for power..... but I recently heard that I cant dual boot on it because Windows XP is not compatable with an 8 core system. Is this true..... how about running it in parrallels.

hI I was wanting to ask a qustion about antivirus software
I have Trend Micro internet security on my computer and through solutions and problems application on Windows Vista Basic. The application a while back found a program update for my antivirus program. What I would like to now is it really important to download the updated Antivirus program and use the new version of Trend Micro internet security witch will be 2008. I am on a broadband connection and I have a router also. Trend Micro internet security has a personal firewall with it but Windows Vista Basic has a firewall of its own so what would also like to now would I put my broadband connection at risk if I went with a free no charge antivirus that has no personal firewall and just use windows Vista Basic firewall all ready on my system.

MAC VS PC
When randomly asking my friends which they prefer the debate is pretty even. Some of them say that a PC is best because if anything goes wrong there is a lot of tech support to back you up. And those who rave about the MAC reply with, that's because there are so few problems with the MAC, that you don't need as many people who can repair it. I personally have used PC's all my life, and would like to experience a MAC for once. My next computer will be a basic MAC just to see what it's like.
I had the "pleasure" of using Vista, and it really is as annoying as everyone describes it. You want to download a new program, Vista asks you 2-3 times to confirm before the item will beginning downloading. It also made the computer run very slow. I had the laptop switched to XP as soon as I could.
I've used the free version of norton, avg, pc tools, and mcafee - they all have one thing in common, very annoyingly asking you to buy their product. Mcafee would sometimes find some of the programs I downloaded and would mistakenly mark them as trojans and viruses when they weren't. In reverse, some other virus programs I tried would find things that both Norton, and AVG would miss. They would both get anything major, but miss anything small. As for the PC tools, I did not like the way it operated. For a more simple-minded folk would not easily be able to understand it .

Off Lease and used PCs
I have seen a lot of useful info and the testimony from users on this site. I am sure that I will find some answers here.
I am looking to buy wholesale off lease or used PCs to aid some folks back in West Africa but finding it tough to get good prices. I need a quantity of 20 to 30 P4 systems including 15 to 19 inch LCD monitors.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

many pointers to remember
many pointers to remember before buying a computer. BUy those which are capable of connecting to TV.The hot thing that is beginning to take over is connecting a PC to the TV – a television is essentially the exact same thing as a monitor anyway, so it isn't as if the two weren't going to integrate at some point. Supposedly, Google TV is going to appear sometime, and then there's the Kodak Theater HD player, which can handle HDTV signals, et cetera – but many people are complaining it doesn't handle YouTube or other sites too well. Still, the tech geeks are going to be practically falling over themselves and getting payday advances to buy one, as if you are able to buy a variety of plastic crap and never having to die.
