When one considers all the technology that may come down the pipe, it is difficult to really imagine what our lives will be like in even 5 years. Suffice to say every advance in technology will reap an unexpected and sometimes unwelcome harvest. Look at how quickly our habits change. Next time you are standing in a Starbucks line-up notice how many people have their heads buried in some sort of mobile email device, most likely a BlackBerry. Access to email has become such a part of many people’s day to day lives that they are more addicted to their email than to the coffee they are lining up for! Just ask any one if they would rather go without their BlackBerry for a day or no coffee; no question, they will forgo the jolt of java in favour of being connected.

When is the best time to buy a new PC? Should you wait until next month when the new processor speed or new graphics capabilities launches? Of course you could play this waiting game forever and you’d never get a computer. The only thing you should think about is what you want your computer to do for you and then get a computer that can do that. To help clarify what this means, let’s take a look at some of the aspects of a computer you should be looking for:
There is a really compelling new direction our wireless world is taking. From a technology perspective it is compelling, that is, not necessarily from an ease of use perspective.
Many of our mobility devices are now designed for hybrid networking. These devices work on more than one network. For example I am testing out the Blackberry Bold, a new Blackberry that actually looks almost exactly like the older Blackberry. The difference is the Bold has WiFi built in. So you can log onto your home or office network and use the Wifi connection.

We have all had the joy of opening a search engine such as Google, typing in a keyword or two and coming back with millions of results. It would take the square root of eternity to work through the results. There are easy ways to better refine the results you receive. For the purpose of this article I will use Google as the search engine but the rules apply to all of the various sites.

If you enjoy watching TV then I’m here to introduce you to your new best friend: the Personal Video Recorder or PVR. A PVR (also called DVR: Digital Video Recorder) is basically a hard drive similar to what you would have in your computer, but this one is set up in your living room. You use a PVR as you would a VCR (remember those?): record shows, fast forward, rewind etc… While VCRs use sequential recording (they record on a tape and you have to ensure your tape is queued to the right spot or you will erase something important), PVRs use digital files and store them on its hard drive so you never have to worry about copying over something you haven’t seen yet.
While GPS (Global Positioning System) is not that new, the world has recently exploded with GPS sales making it the new “gotta have it” electronic gadget. In the past GPS were relegated to handheld units, which are great for outdoors-y type people, but now that you can get GPS with larger screens built right into your car, everybody wants one. If you have never experienced the benefits of GPS first hand then ask around until you find a friend or colleague who has one. Their reaction will be unanimous: they love their GPS and now will never be able to live without one. If you are looking to pick up a GPS then here are a few things you should be aware of. |
